Ana Sofia Fernandes

President of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights (PpDM), the largest organization of Portuguese civil society in the area of women’s human rights and promotion of equality between women and men. She was Vice-President of the European Women’s Lobby, the largest platform of women’s rights NGOs in Europe, between June 2019 and June 2021. She is a Councilor at the Economic and Social Council of Portugal and a member of the European Union / United Nations global reference group of the SPOTLIGHT Initiative.

She holds a degree in International Relations and post-graduate degrees in International Relations and in Development and International Cooperation. She has authored numerous publications on women’s human rights and equality between women and men.

Her professional experience includes positions at EIGE – the European Institute for Gender Equality, a Portuguese Ministerial Office during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in 2007, the Office of the High Commissioner for Migration, and the Portuguese Institute for Management of the European Social Fund.

In the realm of civil society, she was co-founder of the Portuguese Network of Young People for Equality between Women and Men and of EOS – Association for Research, Cooperation and Development.

At PpDM, she works towards the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, as envisioned in CEDAW, the Convention adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, ratified by Portugal in 1980, and considered the Charter of Women’s Human Rights.
